NORTH BERGEN, NJ – (April 22, 2023) On Friday, April 28, 2023, the International Longshoremen’s Association will join the world-wide labor movement observing “International Workers’ Memorial Day” to remember workers killed, injured, or made ill on the job and to renew the fight for strong safety and health protections.”
At ILA ports up and down the coast, Workers’ Memorial Day observances will be held during the week.
In Miami, Florida, waterfront and local community officials will gather at the Port of Miami on Tuesday, April 25 for a noontime service. Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava and PortMiami Director Hydi Webb will join ILA Local 1416 President Torin Ragin; ILA Local 1922 President Luis Gonzales and other labor leaders at the South Florida memorial service.
ILA members at the Port of New York and New Jersey will be gathering at Stella Maris Chapel, 170 Corbin Street, Newark, for a 12 Noon Workers’ Memorial Day Observance. The theme of the New York-New Jersey Observance is “Speak Out For Safe Jobs.”
“The ILA has aways made workers’ safety a top priority,” said International President Harold Daggett. “We are proud to participate in Workers’ Memorial Day Observances at all ILA ports and use the annual occasion to rededicate our efforts to insure the safety of all ILA longshore workers.”
