The full text of the letter read:

Dear President Olvera, Brother Nuñez, and the Members of Local 6,

On behalf of the officers and members of the International Longshoremen’s Association, I extend our full support and solidarity to the members of Warehouse Union Local 6, ILWU, currently on strike at C&H Sugar Company in Crockett, California.

The decision to withhold your labor is never made lightly. It is a sacrifice undertaken not only by the workers on the picket line, but also by their families and communities who stand beside them. Your fight to protect retiree healthcare benefits, preserve your seniority system, defend fair overtime compensation, and secure dignified working conditions is a fight that every union member can understand and support.

Working men and women built this country, and generations of union members before us fought hard to secure the wages, benefits, protections, and dignity that many take for granted today. Attempts to roll back those hard earned gains are not merely attacks on one local union or one group of workers. They are attacks on the entire labor movement.

The ILA understands firsthand the importance of standing united when employers seek concessions at the expense of workers and retirees who dedicated their lives to their jobs and their industries. History has shown time and again that solidarity among working people remains labor’s greatest strength.

Please know that the members of the International Longshoremen’s Association stand shoulder to shoulder with the members of Local 6 during this struggle. We commend your courage, your resolve, and your commitment to protecting the future of your membership and those who will follow in your footsteps.

Stay united, stay strong, and know that you do not stand alone.

In Solidarity

Harold J. Daggett
International President
International Longshoremen’s Association
