New Jersey Governor-Elect Phil Murphy Appoints Dennis Daggett To Transition Team

NORTH BERGEN, NJ – (November 20, 2017) New Jersey Governor-elect Phil Murphy has named Dennis A. Daggett, Executive Vice President, International Longshoremen’s Association to serve on his Transition 2018 Committee to help the new Administration develop policy analysis and recommendations. Daggett, who also is president of ILA Local 1804-1, was appointed to Governor-Elect Murphy’s “Transportation and Infrastructure” Committee.

“It’s a great honor for me, and for the ILA to serve on Governor Murphy’s Transition team,” said Executive Vice President Daggett. “It speaks volumes for the respect Governor Murphy has for our union.”

Dennis Daggett and his father, International President Harold Daggett, had been key advisors throughout Phil Murphy’s successful gubernatorial campaign. The Governor-elect visited ILA headquarters in late September and addressed hundreds of cheering ILA supporter at an ILA Local 1804-1 meeting.

As a member of the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, Dennis Daggett can offer insight into the needs of ILA port facilities, rail and highway improvements that will benefit ILA members at New Jersey ports in Newark, Elizabeth, Bayonne and Camden.

A fourth generation member of his family to work in the longshore industry, Dennis Daggett followed the path of his grandfather, who was a checker with the ILA, and his father, Harold J. Daggett, the current International President. Dennis’ paternal grandfather and great-grandfather were ILA members working as longshoremen in the Port of New York and New Jersey.

Dennis Daggett’s longshore career began when he was employed in container repair for Maersk Line with Universal Maritime Service Corporation in Port Newark, New Jersey. With his ILA Local 1804-1, Daggett was elected Business Agent in December 2000.

On the International, Daggett was ILA Safety Director for the 65,000-member ILA, a position his was first appointed to by then ILA President John Bowers.

In July 2011, Dennis Daggett was unanimously elected President of the ILA’s Atlantic Coast District, leading ports from Maine to Virginia, Great Lakes region, Eastern Canada, major U.S. Rivers and Puerto Rico. He had previously served as Secretary-Treasurer of the ACD District from 2007 to 2011.
Since 2011, he has led ILA Local 1804-1 as President.

Daggett resides in Sparta, New Jersey with his wife, Marisa and two children, Alexa and Joseph.
