ILA President Harold Daggett Calls on Biden Administration To Ban Russian Vessels and Cargo at U.S Ports; “Help End the Crisis In Ukraine By Cutting Off Russian Economy From Foreign Trade”
NORTH BERGEN, NJ – (March 5, 2022) The President of the International Longshoremen’s Association has called on the Biden Administration to expand its directive to shut down American airspace to all Russian aircraft to include banning Russian vessels “owned, operated, staffed, and flagged commercial vessels, as well as Russian cargo, destined for American ports.”
Harold J. Daggett, the International Longshore Union leader, sent a letter today to President Joe Biden as the ILA and its members are seeking ways to end the invasion of Ukraine by Russian forces, under the direction of its leader, Vladimir Putin.
The ILA and its President Daggett had condemned Russia’s invasion of Ukraine last week calling Putin’s action “aggressive and shameful” and “a violation of international law.”
In his letter to today to President Biden asking the President to close off U.S. Ports to all Russian businesses, the ILA leader noted that several of the largest shipping lines that are also parties to the ILA collective bargaining agreement have already suspended service to Russia.
“Furthermore,” ILA President Daggett wrote, “States throughout the country have started restricting and boycotting Russian products in solidarity with the people of Ukraine.”
The ILA believes a federal directive banning all Russian vessels and cargo, is a powerful weapon to damage Putin and his illegal aggression.
