NORFOLK, VA. (September 9, 2021) – William R. Halvorsen, Sr. peacefully went to be with the Lord on September 7, 2021 with his family by his side. Bill was born in Ocean View, VA on December 24, 1937 to Carl and Willie Halvorsen. Bill was a United States Marine and after his service he married the love of his life, Janice on June 24, 1956.

He is preceded in death by his father, Carl T. Halvorsen Sr., and mother, Willie Halvorsen Berryman; mother and father-in-law, Vernon and Tiny Hayden; sister, Mary Snyder (Joe); brother, Carl Halvorsen Jr. (Flora) and nephew, Bert Snelling. 

Left to cherish his memory is his wife of 65 years, Janice W. Halvorsen; son, William R. Halvorsen Jr. (Ann); daughter, Jan R. Halvorsen; son, Richard L. Halvorsen (Theresa); grandchildren, Justin L. Halvorsen (Amberly), Jordan L. Halvorsen, Brian R. Halvorsen; great-grandchildren, Reilly and Lucy; sister, Veronica Sharrett; brother, Frank Halvorsen (Pam) and numerous nephews and nieces and a host of great friends. 

Bill was a dedicated member of Cornerstone Baptist Church Norfolk, VA. He retired from the International Longshoreman’s Association, Clerks and Checkers Local 1624 after 41 years of service in 2002. He was a member of Knights of Pythias Charity 10, Stonehouse Golf Association, Odd Fellows and the North Carolina Beach Buggy Association. 

A funeral service to honor his memory will be held at Woodlawn Funeral Home, 6329 E. Virginia Beach Blvd., Norfolk, VA 23502 on Friday, September 10, 2021 starting at 2pm. A visitation will begin one hour prior in the funeral home chapel. Donations may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and Shriners Hospital for Children.
