NORTH BERGEN, NJ – (July 6, 2019) The 36th Quadrennial Convention of the Atlantic Coast District, International Longshoremen’s Association, begins in 10 days at the Diplomat Beach Resort Hollywood Hotel in Hollywood, Florida. This Convention runs from July 16 to the 18, 2019 and will be followed by the 55th Quadrennial Convention of the International Longshoremen’s Association which will meet at the same locale from July 22 to July 25, 2019.
ILA President Harold Daggett and ACD President Michael J. Vigneron said they each expect record numbers of delegates and guests to attend these Conventions.
Delegates at both conventions will be traveling from many home port areas across the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico to Hollywood, Florida where they will hear from prominent speakers from labor; shipping; maritime and politics. Resolutions will be considered by ACD and ILA delegates and elections for all ACD and ILA Executive Board positions will be held on the final days of each convention.
The ACD will kick off on Tuesday, July 16thand delegates will hear from The Honorable Carmen Yulín Cruz, Mayor of San Juan who guided her City through one of the worst natural disasters – Hurricane Maria – in September 2017. She gained national prominence at the time when she called out President Donald Trump for his callous treatment of Puerto Rico and its citizens. Through its Emergency Relief Fund, the ILA sent over $200,000.00 to ILA members in San Juan to assist them in their recovery.
Powerful political and labor leaders will grace the stage of the International Longshoremen’s Association on its opening day, Monday, July 22, 2019.
The Honorable Robert Menendez, Senator from New Jersey will follow ILA President Harold Daggett’s keynote address at the opening session. Terry O’Sullivan, General President of Laborers International Union of North America (LIUNA) and Richard Trumka, President of the AFL-CIO, will deliver remarks to ILA delegates on that day.
