Multiple International Unions Attending National Conference of Maritime Union of New Zealand Unanimously Adopt Resolution Supporting ILA “In Their Struggle To Prevent Automation That Will Eliminate ILA Jobs”

NORTH BERGEN, NJ (November 14, 2024) Affiliates from multiple international maritime unions meeting this week in Wellington, New Zealand for the National Conference of the Maritime Union of New Zealand unanimously adopted a resolution supporting the International Longshoremen’s Association (ILA) in their negotiations with United States Maritime Alliance (USMX), while applauding the ILA for its stance against the introduction of automation to replace longshore workers.

The world-wide group of unions joined in a resolution noting, “After hearing reports on the continued push from employers to introduce automation and artificial intelligence to replace longshore workers in their traditional roles of moving cargo on the docks, (we) extend our solidarity and full support to the ILA in their struggle to prevent automation that will eliminate ILA jobs.”

The Conference in Wellington, New Zealand includes representation from the International Transport Workers Federation (ITF); International Dockers Council (IDC); Maritime Union of New Zealand (MUNZ); International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU); International Longshoremen’s Association (ILA) and Zen Kowan All Japan Dockworkers Union.

“This resolution emanating out of this week’s Maritime union of New Zealand Conference energizes our entire ILA as we continue our fight against automation that will eliminate ILA jobs,” said International President Harold J. Daggett. “USMX must take notice that the ILA is not alone in this battle. We are joined by tens of thousands of world-wide docker, maritime and transportation unions. On behalf of our ILA’s 85,000 members, I am so grateful for this powerful demonstration of support through this Resolution.”

This notes the importance of the struggle ILA and Zen Kowan are taking on to protect all Dockers and Longshore workers throughout the world – no single issue threatens the future of workers and their families than the replacement of workers with machines
