International Workers Memorial Day To Be Observed Monday April 28, 2025; ILA Ceremonies in Miami and Port of New York and New Jersey Announced

NORTH BERGEN, NJ (April 11, 2025) – The International Longshoremen’s Association will be joining unions across America and around the globe observing “International Workers’ Memorial Day” during the week of April 28, 2025.

On Monday, April 28th, Shipping Association of New York and New Jersey-International Longshoremen’s Association Employee Assistance Program will hold a ceremony at 12 noon at the Stella Maris Chapel, 170 Corbin Street in Newark, New Jersey to “demonstrate our commitment and solidarity in providing and supporting a safe workplace and honoring those who were killed or injured in workplace accidents this past year,” according to a notice distributed by the joint labor-management committee.

On the following day, Tuesday, April 29, 2025, an “ILA Worker’s Memorial Service Gathering” will take place at PortMiami beginning at 12 Noon. Port of Miami ILA Locals 1416 and 1922 are part of the hosting committee that also includes PortMiami, South Florida AFL-CIO, A. Pilip Randolf Institute; and MiameDade County.

According to the AFL-CIO, nearly 55 years ago on April 28, Workers Memorial Day, the Occupational Safety and Health Act went into effect, promising every worker the right to a safe job—our fundamental right. The law was won because of the tireless efforts of the labor movement, which organized for safer working conditions and demanded action from the government to protect working people. Since then, unions and allies have fought hard to make that promise a reality—winning protections under the law that have made jobs safer and saved lives. But all of that is in serious danger as elected leaders threaten to cut staff, defund or outright eliminate federal job safety agencies.
