International Dockworkers Council Delivers Powerful Message of World-Wide Solidarity Supporting ILA and Telling New York Gov. Hochul Join New Jersey in Ending Waterfront Commission
NORTH BERGEN, NJ (March 24, 2022) The Labor Coordinator for the International Dockworkers Council (ICD), Jordi Aragunde, said in a letter to International Longshoremen’s Association President Harold J. Daggett, that the IDC fully supported the union and called on New York Governor Kathy Hochul to follow the lead of New Jersey and move to end the Waterfront Commission of New York Harbor.
“The IDC hereby wishes to express its full support to the ILA and calls on Governor Hochul to follow Governor Murphy’s lead and put an end to this disaster for the port called the Waterfront Commission of New York Harbor,” said Brother Aragunde.
Garnering the IDC’s support is powerful: The IDC is affiliated with more than 120,000 dockworkers around the world. It is a trade union federation made up of dockworker organizations across six major continents.
In their letter of support to the ILA, the IDC noted how the ILA works round-the-clock at all its port areas to keep cargo moving and keeping economies strong.
“ILA workers kept jobs covered and running for the past 48 months, including the period of the Covid-19 crisis,” IDC’s Jordi Aragunde wrote. “We believe they have earned the respect of the authorities and the citizens by their example of professionalism, commitment, and dedication.
“It is time for the decades-long abuse of the Waterfront Commission of New York Harbor to end,” Brother Aragunde added.
