ILA’s Scott Cowan, International Vice President From Port of Baltimore, To be Honored Tonight With Irish Echo Newspaper’s “Outstanding Irish American Labor Leader Award” in New York City
NORTH BERGEN, NJ (September 8, 2023). Scott Cowan, President of Local 333, International Longshoremen’s Association in the Port of Baltimore, and an International Vice President will be honored tonight with the Irish Echo Newspaper’s Irish American Labor Leader Award for 2023.
The ceremonies will take place at the Edison Hotel Ballroom in New York City from 5:30 pm to 9:30 pm.
“The 13th Annual Irish Echo Labor Awards will honor the Labor Leaders of 2023,” according to the Irish Echo. “The contribution of the Irish in America to the cause of labor has been nothing less than immense. Indeed, it could be argued that the American labor movement would not exist at all in its current form without the efforts of the standout Irish men and women through the years.”
Cowan joins a number of ILA officers to be awarded this honor, including Dennis Daggett, John Daggett, Peter Clark, William Hennessey, and Jim McNamara.
Cowan joined the ILA in 1994, starting out as a longshoreman and lasher on the Baltimore waterfront. He later became a machine operator and Bulldozer operator and continued his longshore career as a reefer and power mechanic.
Cowan has represented ILA Local 333 in Local and Master Contract negotiations and has served on several committees for his local, the ILA’s Atlantic Coast District and the International.
A native of Baltimore, Cowan attended Catholic elementary schools and graduated from Mount Saint Joseph High School. He continued his studies on the collegiate level at Anne Arundel Community College in Arnold, Maryland.
In 2022, Cowan was part of a Port of Baltimore delegation that welcomed President Joseph Biden to the Maryland port.
In September 2023, Cowan was honored with the Irish Echo’s Outstanding Irish American Labor Leader Award.
Cowan currently resides in Hampstead, Maryland with his wife Meghan and his children Conner, Dylan, Kamryn, Grace, Kerrington, and Joseph.
