NORTH BERGEN, NJ – (June 16, 2020) The leader of the International Longshoremen’s Association, AFL-CIO applauded his counterpart at the International Longshore and Warehouse Union for the ILWU’s planned eight-hour work stoppage planned for this Friday, June 19, 2020 in observance of Juneteenth. Juneteenth commemorates the date in history when Black slaves in Texas first learned of their emancipation.
Harold J. Daggett, ILA President sent ILWU President Willie Adams a message today applauding and supporting the ILWU for their planned work stoppage.
“Coupled with the ILA’s Peaceful Protest Hour last Tuesday, in honor of George Floyd and other victims of racially motivated killings that was observed at all ILA ports on the Atlantic and Gulf Coasts; Great Lakes region, Canada and Puerto Rico; dockworkers on both coasts in North America are engaging in progressive and meaningful job actions to demonstrates our unity and power to bring change and reform where needed,” said the ILA leader. “Freedom and respect are basic human rights and I am proud that your organization and mine will not rest until every person enjoys those rights.”
