See this area right here, this used to be filled with people ready to go to work. This is Maersk Line, Pier 400 in the Port of Los Angeles. This yard right here used to be filled with workers – UTR’s, top handlers, signalmen, transtainers, clerks – all sorts of workers – about a thousand of ‘em every day. Now this is an automated terminal. This place is empty. This yard is quiet. There’s nobody making money except the for the big billionaires. So, when you guys start talking about “pro-automation” and you think longshoremen are paid too much, remembers Longshoremen are Americans. They’re American workers. And because of this automation, they’ve all been put out of work in this terminal. So just remember, automation might seem cool, but it’s not very cool to the workers.
