ILA Endorsed New Jersey Gubernatorial Candidate Steve Sweeney Pledges Continued Support For ILA As He Addresses Over a Thousand ILA Local 1804-1 Members

NORTH BERGEN, NJ (April 30, 2025) New Jersey Gubernatorial Steve Sweeney, endorsed by the International Longshoremen’s Association and International President Harold J. Daggett, addressed over a thousand ILA members of Local 1804-1 last evening at the local’s monthly meeting in Short Hills, New Jersey, and pledged his continued support to the ILA against the threat of automation and other issues important to New Jersey families.

“The New Jersey Democratic Primary is six weeks from today, on Tuesday June 10th, and the ILA needs to get out and vote and support our longtime friend and labor champion Steve Sweeney,” said International President Harold Daggett. “Sisters and Brothers, Steve Sweeney is a career union iron worker and the only candidate for New Jersey Governor who gives a shit about you and your families. As the former New Jersey Senate President, Steve Sweeney was the force behind our ILA successfully getting rid of the Waterfront Commission in New Jersey.”

The ILA Leader encouraged his members to rally around Steve Sweeney on Primary Day, June 10th.

“Only a small percentage of registered voters participate in Primaries, so voter turnout by ILA members, their families and friends will guarantee a victory for Steve,” ILA President Daggett said.

ILA Local President Dennis A. Daggett said Steve Sweeney has never failed the ILA when called upon for help.

“Whether it was launching the campaign to remove the Waterfront Commission in New Jersey to fighting for ILA members to protect our jurisdiction and securing prevailing wage rate guarantees in New Jersey, Steve Sweeney always answered the phone when President Harold Daggett or I called him and he always delivered,” said Dennis Daggett.

Over a thousand members of ILA Local 1804-1 attending Tuesday night’s meeting at the Hilton Short Hills in Short Hills, New Jersey treated Steve Sweeney to thunderous applause and three standing ovations as the ILA-endorsed candidate thanked the ILA for their endorsement and support.

“What Harold Daggett and your union did in achieving a landmark Master Contract, with the protections against automation and other incredible gains, is a testament to your strength and I am grateful for your support,” Steve Sweeney said.
