Statement by Harold J. Daggett, President, International Longshoremen’s Association, On the Deaths of Two City of Newark Firefighters Killed Battling Blaze Aboard Cargo Ship

NORTH BERGEN, NJ – (July 6, 2023) On behalf of the membership of the International Longshoremen’s Association, we extend collective prayers and deepest sympathy to the families of the two City of Newark Firefighters, who perished today trying to extinguish a fire aboard a cargo ship at Port Newark, New Jersey.

“Two brave firefighters from the City of Newark were killed trying to extinguish a fire aboard a cargo ship that was being worked by my ILA members,” said ILA President Daggett. “Our entire ILA family at all ports extends prayers and sympathies to the families of those valiant firefighters whose lives were lost.”

The ILA leader added: “We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the City of Newark Firefighters and other area Fire Departments, EMS, and Port Authority of New York and New Jersey Police for their efforts to bring this fire under control.”
